| Picturesquely
situated on the crescent shaped left bank of the
holy Ganga, Varanasi, one of the ancient seats
of learning in India, is said to be a compound
of the names of two streams, the Varuna and the
Assi, which still flow in the north and south
of the city respectively. This name seems to have
been corrupted, in medieval times to Banaras,
which was in use till May 24, 1956 when it was
changed to Varanasi, by an order of the Government
of India. Varanasi is probably one of the most
ancient living cities in India. From time immemorial
it has been a great religious center for Hindus
and one of their most sacred places of pilgrimage,
being visited by millions of people every year.
At a distance of 12 km from Varanasi lies Sarnath,
where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. Here
he revealed the eight fold path that leads to
the attainment of inner peace, Enlightment and
Ultimate Nirvana.
Varanasi is the city of “Lord
Shiva" and the capital of all knowledge is
known as City of Light.Varanasi is a religious

| Kashmir |
| Set like a jeweled
crown on the map of India, Kashmir is a multi-faceted
diamond, changing its hues with the seasons -
always extravagantly beautiful. Two major Himalayan
ranges, the Great Himalayan Range and the Pir
Panjal, surround the landscape from the north
and south respectively. They are the source of
great rivers, which flow down into the valleys,
forested with orchards and decorated by lily-laden
lakes.
The Mughals aptly called Kashmir ‘Paradise
on Earth’ where they journeyed across the
hot plains of India, to the valley’s cool
environs in summer. Here they laid, with great
love and care, Srinagar’s many formal, waterfront
gardens, now collectively known as the Mughal
Gardens. Anecdotes of four and five centuries
ago describe their love for these gardens, and
the rivalries that centred around their ownership.
They also patronized the development of art &
craft among the people of Kashmir, leaving behind
a heritage of exquisite artisanship among these
people and making the handicrafts of the land
prized gifts all over the world. |

| Agra |
A white marble
tomb had been built in 1631-48 in Agra, seat of
the Mugal Empire, by Shah Jehan for his wife,
Mumtaj Mahal, the monument sums up many of the
formal themes that have played through Islamic
architecture. Its refined elegance is a conspicuous
contrast both to the Hindu architecture of pre-Islamic
India, with its thick walls corbelled arches,
and heavy lintels, and to the Indo Islamic styles,
in which Hindu elements are combined with an eclectic
assortment of motifs from Persian and Turkish
sources.
The Mausoleum of the Taj Mahal at Agra stands
in a formally laid-out walled garden entered through
a pavilion on the main axis. The tomb, raised
on a terrace and first seen reflected in the central
canal, is entirely sheathed in marble, but the
mosque and counter-mosque on the transverse axis
are built in red sandstone. The four minarets,
set symmetrically about the tomb, are scaled down
to heighten the effect of the dominant, slightly
bulbous dome. The mosques, built only to balance
the composition are set sufficiently far away
to do no more than frame the mausoleum.
|
|
|
| In essence,
the whole riverside platform is a mosque courtyard
with a tomb at its centre. The great entrance
gate with its domed central chamber, set at the
end of the long watercourse, would in any other
setting be monumental in its own right. |

The historic city of Jaipur or "The City
of Victory" was founded in 1727 A.D. by the
great Kachhawah ruler Sawai Jai Singh II and named
after him. The city is rectangular in shape and
divided into nine blocks on the basis of principles
laid down inthe"Shilpa Shasta", the
ancient Indian treatise on architecture. Built
on the pattern of a grid, the city has wide straight
avenues, roads, streets and lanes and uniform
rows of shops on either side at the main bazar,
all arranged in nine rectangular city sectors
The principal monuments of Jaipur are concentrated
in the centrally situated Palace area in and around
the city Palace. In course of time, the sunset-pink
tinge of its walls, buildings and temples gave
it the name Pink City.

New Delhi, the
capital of India, sprawled over the west bank
of the river Yamuna is one of the fastest growing
cities in India. It is surrounded on three sides
by Haryana and to the east, across the river Yamuna
by Uttar Pradesh. Historically, the city has long
since been the foremost in political importance
with successive dynasties choosing it as their
seat of power, between the 13th and the 17th centuries.
Remnants of the glorious past survive as important
monuments in different parts of the city.
The myriad faces of the city are simply fascinating.
In some places it remains a garden city, tree
lined and with beautiful parks, but in some places
it can also be crowded with heavy traffic. Turbaned
Sikhs, colourfully dressed Rajasthani and Gujarati
women working in offices, Muslim shopkeepers along
Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, Tibetans and Ladakhis
in the street stalls along Janpath and Kashmiris
in the handicraft emporia around Connaught Place,
all add to the cosmopolitan feel of the city.
Soaring skyscrapers, posh residential colonies
and bustling commercial complexes can be seen
along with the ancient historical monuments. Its
boutiques and shopping arcades offer access to
a wealth of traditional and contemporary crafts,
from all over the country. Old Delhi which looks
entirely different from New Delhi area, is about
6 Km north of the city center.

| Mahabalipuram |
Though it is no longer a
port, Mamallapuram has retained its fame in stone,
thanks to the great contribution of Pallava artisans.
It is among the most outstanding examples of Dravidian
art and architecture and a jewel in the crown
of Tamil Nadu. In a land that is liberally strewn
with some of the best in temple art, Mamallapuram
holds its own, and stands as a silent yet eloquent
witness to the glory of its creators.Unfortunately
most of the work was left incomplete, and time
and nature have also eroded the remains of this
once great port.
Mamallapuram BathersYet, Mamallapuram's
wonders in rock leave visitors enthralled, conveying
as they do, an impression of beauty and harmony.
The monuments are floodlit at night and so it
is possible to enjoy their beauty even after sunset.
The Mamallapuram dance festival is conducted every
year during Dec-Jan. It is a month long festival
and dances take place during the weekends. Classical
dances such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali,
Mohini Attam, Odissi, Kathak etc., are performed
by well-known exponents of the art.

Krishna Mandapam
This cave has a big bas-relief, notable
for its realistic representation. The panel relates
one of the stories of Lord Krishna.
Caves
There are nine rock-cut cave temples. The
Mahishasuramardhini cave, contrasting the goddess
fighting a demon on one side, and Lord Vishnu's
cosmic sleep on the other, is a particularly remarkable.
